There are many different options available to you if you want to set up an ecommerce site. Some of these options are free whilst others cost money. It's certainly very confusing to know which road to go down, especially if you have never created a website before.
Depending on what hosting company you use, there are free options available to you for creating an ecommerce website. Hosting companies such as HostGator and MidPhase both offer Zen Cart, CubeCart and OS Commerce for free. In order to install them on your website all you do is go into CPanel > Fantastico and then choose which ecommerce system you want from the side menu. They are really easy to instal even if you have never done anything like this before.
However it's important to understand that although these systems are free, they are also pretty basic. When you start to use them you might find that there are features you would like to have but in order to have them you need to buy plugins. If you don't have any idea how to install these plugins you will then need to pay someone to do it for you. All of a sudden something that started out free can be pretty costly.
Another free system that has been getting a lot of good reviews is Magento. Have a look at reviews that people have put on the internet about Magento and you will get an idea of whether it's for you or not. It might take you a while to get used to using it however there are a lot of features that are really good and are already built into the site. When setting up any website to sell products you will want to try and get your customer to buy as much as possible via "up sells." If you have ever bought anything from Amazon you will see that they do this very well. The great thing about Magento is that they understand this too and have upsell features built in.
If you are still confused or simply don't want to deal with any of this yourself then it's a good idea to get a website designer. Finding one locally will probably cost you a lot of money. If you have the money to spend then that's fine but if you don't then you should look at finding one from India because they are much cheaper. You can either do a search on Google or you can register with rentacoder.com and place an advert. Make sure you spend time looking through rentacoder.com for more information about how to advertise for a developer and such like. There are really good tips there which can potentially save you a lot of hassle and money in the long run.
Unfortunately there's so much more to setting up an eccommerce website than just what is stated above. There's also the issue of what hosting company and domain register to use, keyword reseach and you also need to understand how to do search engine optimization.
